Bringing up baby--Bringing down a killer

An over the top, good-time cozy mystery

While taking baby Laurie to her very first Photo Shoot, sleuth and first-time mom Kate Connolly and her baby are the victims of a hit-and-run. Fortunately they escape unharmed, but when a witness identifies the car's French diplomatic license plates, Kate and her hubby try to get some answers. Soon they discover there's something going on at the French consulate that's dirtier-and far deadlier-than any diaper. It's up to Kate to keep Family Life on track while solving another puzzling whodunit!

“A straightforward whodunit … chick lit meets noir in Diana Orgain’s fun mystery.”
—The Mystery Gazette

-Lousie Ure, Shamus Award-Winning Author

"A fun, fast, cozy read that will keep its readers entertained and anxiously awaiting the next installment."

Formula for Murder A Funny Mystery A Maternal Instincts Mystery Book 3 edition by Diana Orgain Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

This was fine if you just want a light read that doesn't require much in the way of thought, and if you don't care too much about how accurately events or settings are portrayed. The main characters are somewhat shallow and one-dimensional, but are basically good-hearted and pleasant enough. The protagonist is a new mother who seems to have decided to yield to her inherent nosiness and try to channel it into a career as a private investigator, thinking she can work from home and spend more time with her newborn. The result, however, is that she constantly leaves the baby with husband/mother/friends/neighbors in order to run off haphazardly following leads, she doesn't follow any real investigative procedures and just lucks into various clues here and there. She then feels guilty about leaving the baby so much, but only whines about it, rather than doing anything to change how she approaches things. Eventually she stumbles into the solution to the mystery, has a few close shaves, and comes out mostly unscathed. I didn't find her particularly appealing or realistic, and occasionally found her affluent dilletante demeanor somewhat offensive. It wasn't so offensive that I wanted to stop reading the book, but it was unappealing enough that I don't plan to read any further in the series. If you are bored and looking for something to keep your eyes occupied then by all means read this book, but try not to think too hard about what you're reading.

Formula for Murder A Funny Mystery A Maternal Instincts Mystery Book 3 edition by Diana Orgain Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This series has good potential once the characters are fleshed out and consistent. While Orgain has captured the roller coaster of emotions running through a new mother, the character seems inconsistent and over the top. In one section, she's crying because her mother took little Laurie to have Christmas pictures made when she hadn't had the time to do so and in the next, she's heading out again without little Laurie with only the slightest twinge of guilt. I have trouble figuring out whether she's sincere. If she's really feeling that guilty, why not run the errands she can where she can take Laurie or stay home with her for a time? She's trying to become a P.I., but it seems she has such a loose relationship with her mentor that she'll never get her licence. Her mentor might be accomplished in that field, but he certainly doesn't know how to mentor.

All of that said, with some thought and character development, this could be the beginning of an outstanding cozy series. I'm willing to try the second book to see if these characters grow and become the base of a series that is fun to read.
Aspiring PI Kate was driving her car when it was hit by another car. She had her three-month-old daughter with her and, luckily, neither of them was injured. The driver of the other car sped away, but a witness provided enough information that the police were able to determine that the car belonged to someone at the French Embassy. Having diplomatic plates meant there was no way to arrest the other driver.
But when a reporter covering the story is killed, her husband hires Kate to help find her killer. The French Embassy figures into this case as well.
Diana Orgain’s descriptions of a new mother, trying to balance her fledgling career with being involved in her new daughter’s life are somewhat inconsistent. I don’t think a woman breastfeeding her child would be gone from her so often and for such extended periods of time. She’s upset that she misses some important “firsts,” but she can’t have it both ways. She also has unrealistic expectations for her baby, i.e., enrolling her is an Art Exploration Class. She’s upset to find that her friend has given Laurie a breadstick. Laurie has never had solid food. The friend has young children and would know how dangerous that could be.
The book has some interesting descriptions “Curled up like a little sow bug on his shoulder.”and humor, some of it sarcastic, (“I’m scared about brain damage,” I confessed to her. “Why are you scared?...You’ve lived your whole life with it.”), some insight (“Did you know that just the sound of a baby’s cry makes your blood pressure rise?”), and some contradictions (On one page The Christmas tree was made up of different size LED lightbulbs and gave off a soft white light and an annoying hum. On the next page “They’re using up enough power to light up San Francisco for a day.” LED bulbs do not use that much power.), saying she was concerned because her to-do list was growing longer (There were five items on that day. That was one of the shortest ones. On a previous day, there were ten.)
I could identify with one of her insights “My theory is that designer dresses are cut large to make you feel slim as you drop a ton of money on them. Paula tried to reassure me that the reverse was true, but I didn’t believe her.” One time when I was looking for a suit or dress for my wedding, the saleswoman brought me almost a dozen outfits in sizes ranging from 6 to 14. The smaller the size, the higher the price.
Her main grammatical error was not knowing the correct use of the first person pronouns “He watched the exchange between Jean-Luc and I....”“He came between Nancy and I....” “She hovered over both Galigani and I.”
The story is a fast-read, somewhat formulaic cozy mystery. It’s one of a series, but the first, and likely the last one I’ll read.

New mother runs around (right before Christmas no less) playing private investigator and fretting over whether she is a bad mother. Since she's breastfeeding a three month old baby while drinking alcohol and caffeine that is an easy "yes" from the get-go. Then there is the world's dumbest storyline Reporter is killed while investigating whether the FRENCH Consul at the FRENCH Consulate actually deserved an award the FRENCH government just gave him. Who in her target audience of San Franciscans is supposed to give a hoot?! If this isn't enough there are grammar and vocabulary issues. Example The receptionist "deferred" us to one of his assistants. (Big eye roll.) You get the picture.
